By Juan Carlos Guzman-Baiges, Leadership Academy Alum and Executive Director of JustLead Washington
Joining JustLead Washington last year filled me with excitement for the opportunity to support others as we collectively imagine and continue to build a world where everyone belongs. This past year has deepened my reflection on the transformative power of gratitude and compassion as acts of resistance and tools for fostering workable unity and strategic alignment. This year, I’ve found myself saying “thank you, muchas gracias” countless times, a testament to the incredible individuals who have extended their hands in support, comfort, mentorship, and guidance. Being part of this network of leaders has been profoundly grounding; reminding me that even in the face of challenges, we are stronger when we stand together. Their kindness and resilience continue to inspire and uplift me, reinforcing the importance of community in our shared journey toward equity and justice.
This year, I’ve listened to powerful stories of personal and professional transformation inspired by many experiences in the Leadership Academy. Hearing these stories has been a catalyst for me to deepen my self-awareness and enhance my other-awareness, which, in turn, has led to a richer understanding of my own past, culture, and the lasting impacts of the colonization and occupation of my people and the land where I grew up.
This year, I also had the privilege of sharing space with a group of extraordinary leaders who cultivated a unique environment of empowerment and inspiration. The 2024 Leadership Academy, our first all-BIPOC cohort, has left a profound impact, reminding me of the enduring power of collective courage and shared purpose. We are extremely grateful to this year’s cohort for their commitment to equity, their courage in sharing their stories, and for trusting us to support them throughout this year. We are incredibly grateful for the insights and energy they brought to each conversation. We have learned so much from all of them, and we deeply appreciate the ways they have leaned on each other, shared their perspectives, and openly explored the complex issues surrounding equity and justice.

As we head into 2025 and welcome a new group of leaders into our alumni network, I encourage all of us to continue fostering strategic thinking within our organizations and communities. Today, more than ever, we must leverage the power of our stories to open doors and inspire others to join the journey toward equity and anti-racism. Let us prioritize self-care, nurture our resilience, and extend support to those around us as they focus on their own wellness. Let us draw inspiration from the courage, wisdom, and dedication of the pro-equity leaders who came before us, persevering even when the path forward seemed unclear. May we find strength and hope in the legacy they entrusted to us and carry it forward with purpose and intentionality.
Once we lose hope, we are guaranteed to lose. But if we ignore the odds and fight to create an antiracist world, then we give humanity a chance to one day survive, a chance to live in communion, a chance to be forever free. –

I share my deep gratitude with our equity and justice community and invite us all to continue cultivating our knowledge around justice, raising our voices to promote lasting systemic transformation, and engaging in dialogues and capacity-building opportunities. Together, we can build the future we imagine—one where everyone belongs in the Circle of Human Concern and has equitable opportunities to thrive, living in peace and harmony.
