Fall 2021 Virtual Leadership Academy Application Instructions & Information

We are excited to announce that the application period for the 2021 Fall Leadership Academy, Cohort VIII, is now open. As we continue to navigate the impacts of the triple pandemics of COVID-19, virulent racism, and deepening poverty we are grateful to be able to offer space for legal and community advocates committed to transformative change to build strong adaptive leadership skills and lasting relationships.

Due to continued restraints on travel and physical gatherings, the Fall 2021 Cohort (Cohort VIII) will meet virtually with some possibility of gathering in person prior to the end of the experience.

Fall 2021 Fellows will participate in four, 2-day virtual training retreats taking place September 23-24, November 18-19, January 20-21, and March 24-25 (all Thursdays and Fridays). The timing of the retreats has been extended from what was initially shared this Spring, based on feedback from current virtual fellows. Retreats will typically run from 9:00am-3:00pm each day. Fellows will also be asked to join half-day workshopping sessions in-between retreats to practice the skills they are developing.

We are currently accepting applications for the Fall cohort. Applications are due by Wednesday, July 7, 2021. Read on for program details, dates, and application instructions.


Participation Details

Fall 2021 Fellows will participate in four, 2-day virtual training retreats taking place September 23-24, November 18-19, January 20-21, and March 24-25 (all Thursdays and Fridays). Retreats will typically run from 9:00am-3:00pm each day. Fellows will also be asked to join half-day workshopping sessions in-between retreats to practice the skills they are developing. Workshopping dates are tentatively scheduled for Fridays, 9am – 12pm, on October 22, December 10, and February 11. Applicants must commit to attending all retreats and to completing work individually and in small groups between retreat sessions. All program costs are covered as needed.

Application Instructions

Applications due by Wednesday, July 7th 2021!

In addition to answering questions within the form you will also be asked to upload two documents as part of your application:

  1. A Resume or Summary of Relevant Professional & Volunteer experience (no more than 2 pages), and
  2. An Employer/Sponsoring Organization Letter of Support
    If you do not have a direct supervisor/employer (e.g. you are self-employed, an Executive Director, or are applying in your capacity as a board member or volunteer) you may have a board member or representative of a partnering organization complete this letter of support.

About the Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy and JustLead Washington aim toward a society where everyone “belongs” within what Professor john a. powell has called the Circle of Human Concern as full members of society, without exception. As such, our curriculum expressly focuses on increasing understanding of the ways in which poverty, systemic racism, and other forms of bias and oppression intersect and create harm, particularly within low-income communities and communities of color.

The Academy’s core curriculum was initially developed in partnership with the Shriver National Center on Poverty Law and is designed specifically to enhance the adaptive leadership capacity of advocates and organizations working toward equity & justice within Washington State. Fellows learn and practice several core leadership competencies, such as:

  1. Communicating Strategic Intent (with an emphasis on narrative storytelling)
  2. Enhancing Self-Awareness & Other-Awareness
  3. Achieving Workable Unity Across Difference (with an emphasis on equity and inclusion)
  4. Engaging in Systems and Strategic Thinking
  5. Delivering on Strategic Intent (translating your mission, vision, and values into action)
  6. Developing Leadership Capacity in Others
  7. Fostering Processes of Individual, Organizational, and Community Renewal
  8. Building Competence and Confidence for Anti-Racism and Pro-Equity Work
